During the fall and winter months, the weather begins to change drastically. The leaves start to fall, our annual flowers die and everything sort of goes into hiding mode. With a lack of sun and warmth, our bodies tend to have the same type of effect. Which is why we must give it some extra love and support during the colder months. If we do not then we will have dry, crackly and itchy skin. Even more so in states or countries that tend to be colder, cloudier, and windier more months out of the year than usual, like Belgium!
So what is the solution? How can we transition our regimen to match up with every season? It's simple really..the key is to exfoliate and moisturize on a regular basis. Especially if you have a job that requires you to work outside in the cold, dry atmosphere, then your skin will absorb more dry, cold air and in the end be drier! Follow these easy steps to keep your skin looking and feeling great!
Step 1: Drink at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day. Hydrate your skin from the inside-out.
Step 2: Avoid frequent and long hot showers and baths. The heat will ultimately seep deep into your pores and dry out your skin.
Step 3: Use a gentle exfoliator from head to toe to rid your body of the dead skin cells.

When your skin is dry, it stops shedding the dead skin cells which is why you see cracked skin. Exfoliating will help your body shed the skin and then absorb the moisturizer better.
**If you experience dryness in your lips, you can also incorporate a lip exfoliator at night to remove dead skin cells. Using and reapplying lip balm and/or vaseline may not be a solution for keeping your lips soft. The petroleum will just sit on the top layer of your skin rather than absorbing.
Step 4: Try to moisturize your hands after every wash. Washing your hands frequently due to cold and flu season will lead to dry, cracked and brittle nails.
Step 5: Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! Did you know that regular moisturizing can slow the signs of aging, boost circulation, relieve and avoid dry skin, repair skin damage, and reduce acne? It should be the most important part of your skincare routine! A good moisturizer will add a protective layer to your skin, preventing future moisture loss. Fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, are known to attract more moisture to the skin and keep it plump and firm.
Apply moisture on your body immediately after your shower, even if your skin is still a bit damp. The moisture starts to disappear and soon as it begins to dry. Moisturizing will help to keep your skin feeling soft and supple.
If needed, add an additional heavier moisturizer to your skin routine. This will help your skin to retain the extra moisture that is being taken away from it. Putting the extra moisturizer on in the evening after your nightly wash will allow your skin to rest and retain the moisture while you are sleeping. Also, it will not interfere with any makeup regimen that you may have during the day time. But just because there is not sun every day, do not stop your sunscreen regimen. Always protect your skin from the sun!
Try to eliminate skincare products that have a lot of alcohol and fragrances. This will only dry your skin out more and is not good for your skin in the long run. Look for products that say “alcohol-free”, “fragrance-free”, and “non-comedogenic which means non-clogging”.
